RUMAH GADANG is a stilt house with a large physical shape, and is a typical traditional house of MINANGKABAU, WEST SUMATERA. The hallmark of the rumah gadang is its roof in the form of a buffalo horn or better known as gonjong. In general, the more gonjong in a rumah gadang, the more exalted the rumah gadang is. The form of the rumah gadang is elongated and empty in the middle, intended for a gathering place for relatives.
The Bustanil Arifin PDIKM Museum (Center for Documentation and Information on Minangkabau Culture) Padang Panjang, which is located in Silaing Bawah Village, West Padang Panjang District, has a building in the form of a Rumah Gadang with the type of Rumah Gadang Gajah Maharam originating from Lareh Koto Piliang. This museum contains various information and collections about MINANGKABAU culture in the form of audio and visual documentation. The building of the Bustanil Arifin PDIKM Museum Rumah Gadang has a variety of carving patterns and motifs. The seven gonjongs found on the roof of Rumah Gadang have a philosophy and harmony with nature. Meaningful reflection of human relationship with God, prosperity and social status.
PDIKM was established as a thank you from Mr. Bustanil ARIFIN to his homeland. PDIKM was built in 1988 and inaugurated on December 17, 1990, founded by the initiative of Mr. ABDUL HAMID AND his family and Mr. H BUSTANIL ARIFIN SH, and inaugurated by the governor of West Sumaters was motivated by the idea that so far collections containing information about Minangkabau are mostly found in the Leiden library, the Netherlands so that obtaining this information requires money, time and good language skills. Therefore, PDIKM was established to make it easier for the public, researchers and students to learn about MINANGKABAU.
